On Sunday February 22 Shoreline Leisure Greystones hosted the first Wicklow Community Rowing Indoors Challenge. Sponsored by Rowing Ireland and inspired by the World Rowing Virtual Indoors Championships which took place on the same weekend both events followed the same race format.
At Shoreline competitors in age group categories ranging from U18 to 60+ could race one minute for max distance and/or a 1000m or 5K for time. There was also a 2000m team relay race. The relay teams were comprised of 4 Men or 4 Women or a mixed crew of 2 men and 2 women with each team member racing 500m in succession. Well done to everyone who competed.
Competitors at Shoreline had the option to pre-register for the World Rowing Virtual event and to submit their time to World Rowing to potentially qualify for the finals which took place entirely online the following weekend and were broadcast live on YouTube.
A big congratulations to all the Irish competitors who did so well at the World Rowing finals and especially to two-time gold medalist Kenny McDonald for taking first place in the Men’s 50-54 lightweight category in the 1 minute and 1000m races.
A huge thank you to Rowing Ireland and Shoreline Leisure Greystones for helping make the Wicklow Community Rowing Indoors challenge day a success. We look forward to welcoming you to the next one.
